Coleman A. Young Recreation Center reopens after $11 million renovation project | City of Detroit

The City of Detroit General Services Department, Recreation Division is excited to welcome residents back to Coleman A. Young Recreation Center. The rec center, named after Detroit’s first Black mayor, first opened in 1980. In March 2020, the rec center closed due to the pandemic. Since then, the building underwent $11 million worth of improvements.

Henry Ford Health surgeon runs mentorship program to inspire high school students

A Henry Ford Health surgeon is on a mission to get more high school students of color interested in the medical field.

With the help of colleagues, thoracic surgeon Dr. Ikenna Okereke runs a mentorship program out of Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. Students speak with surgeons and have hands-on opportunities to see if it’s the right path for them.

Stolen University of Detroit Mercy class ring returned to rightful owner 15 years later

DETROIT – John Wozniak gave his 1964 University of Detroit Mercy class ring to his son Dave Wozniak before he passed in 2007. Less than 10 months later, the ring was stolen from Dave Wozniak’s home in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Now, 15 years later, the ring is back with Dave Wozniak. It’s all thanks to a dedicated construction superintendent and the magic of the internet.

Mayor Mike Duggan joined beloved community activist Helen Moore and neighborhood residents and other city officials for the grand opening of Helen Moore Community Center and Ed Davis Park on Dexter Avenue in the Dexter-Linwood and Russell Woods neighborhoods.

Today, Mayor Duggan joined city leaders and community partners to celebrate the completion of Tireman-Minock Park, a beautiful new park right in the heart of the Warrendale/Cody Rouge neighborhood.
